Street Banner Design Contest!

Updated: May 26, 2023

The Calgary Chinatown street banners initiative, which commenced in the early 2000s, involves the periodic replacement of banners to offer a renewed visual appeal while reflecting the latest developments in our community. We have collaborated with Chinese calligraphers and local artists to design banners after the flood in 2013, We’ve also had banners related to the Chinese Zodiac. The three designs currently in Chinatown were selected during the last contest in 2021. Once again, we ask you to help us on designing a banner that will be used in Chinatown from 2023 to 2025 that showcases our rich cultural heritage.

Requirements:

To be eligible, participants must be 18 years or older and reside in Calgary, AB or the surrounding area.

The banner specifications require CMYK colour mode and a size of two 48" H x 24" W with two 2" pocket holes and bleed.

Multiple submissions are allowed. Each set of banners must have two sides (left and right), and the participant must submit a complete design layout for a set; otherwise, it will be considered forfeited.

Participants must include the Chinatown logo as a mandatory element in their design. The logo usage guideline and high-resolution file can be downloaded here:

Hints:

Designs that feature bright colours and contrasting colour combinations are highly desirable. We recommend keeping the design simple and avoiding intricate details that may be lost in printing. We encourage the inclusivity of Chinese culture in the design concept.

The banners will be printed on vinyl material with double-sided printing. Design longevity should be taken into consideration, as the banners will be displayed for a period of twelve to twenty-four months.

Your submission must include:
